In the fall of 2007, CMAP asked residents of Cook, DuPage, Will, Kane, McHenry, Lake, and Kendall counties to use their cameras to capture what they value about the region. Submissions to the "Images of Northeastern Illinois" photo contest may be showcased in CMAP’s upcoming GO TO 2040 comprehensive plan, the first ever to integrate land use and transportation planning for the seven-county region. CMAP will also use selected images on the agency's website and in other regional plans.
Announcement of contest winners. On January 9, 2008, CMAP announced the winning entries in its regional "Images of Northeastern Illinois" photography contest. Read more details in a press release.
Commemorative Booklet: Images of Northeastern Illinois. Click here to download (1MB PDF) a CMAP booklet of winning entries from the photo contest. This document was printed in limited quantity for presentation to contest winners at the CMAP Board meeting on January 9, 2008.
Residents were asked to show what they value about the region. The contest had five themes, with two winners for each theme and one overall winner:
- Diversity – people, places, culture
- Community Vitality – transportation, livable communities, retail, neighborhood pride
- Natural Environment – lakes, rivers, preserves, parks, sky, wildlife
- Global Appeal – business centers, commerce, production, movement of goods, finance
- Architecture/Urban Design – plazas, buildings, neighborhoods, boulevards
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) was created recently to integrate planning for land use and transportation in northeastern Illinois. CMAP and its partners are removing barriers to cooperation across geographical boundaries and subject areas such as land use, transportation, natural resources, housing, and economic development. By understanding how these issues -- and our communities' futures -- are inter-related, CMAP seeks to change the way planning is conducted in northeastern Illinois. The photography contest is related to the Regional Comprehensive Plan, an integrated plan for land use and transportation for northeastern Illinois. The plan will develop a vision for what the region should look like in the year 2040, and will identify the most effective ways to get us there.
We want to thank all of our contestants who participated in making this contest a big success, with close to 200 entries. If you have questions, please contact Amy Talbot at photo@cmap.illinois.gov or call 312.386.8646. Thank you for your interest!
Congratulations, 2007 Contest Winners!
