Working with local communities

Local communities know their challenges best. That’s why the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is meeting with local government leaders to learn about how communities are already planning for the future and what issues The Century Plan should prioritize for regional coordination.

Throughout the first half of 2026, CMAP held workshops with each council of governments sub-area. CMAP is very thankful to the more than 190 local government elected officials and staff — representing nearly 90 communities across northeastern Illinois — who participated and provided valuable insights!

Discussions focused on how regional trends are showing up at the local level, what strategies communities are already putting in place, and what the region should prioritize in the coming decades. This input will directly inform The Century Plan — stay tuned for a summary on these local insights.
