September 18, 2024 A reimagined River Grove through collaborative, comprehensive planning The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) has released Reimagine River Grove, the Village of River Grove’s first comprehensive plan. The plan is the result of two years of collaboration, following a CMAP technical assistance award for comprehensive plan support in 2022. Reimagine River Grove is meant to be the village’s guiding north star over the next 10 to 20 years. The plan will serve as a framework for elected officials, village staff, and community members to make informed decisions regarding land use, community development, transportation, economic development, and green space improvements throughout River Grove. The plan is flexible as changes occur throughout the village, with updates to ensure it stays relevant to River Grove’s growth trajectory. The plan was created through a collaborative process that engaged residents, interest groups, village staff, and others who call River Grove home. Research, data collection, and deep community engagement shaped the planning process into this comprehensive plan, meant to usher River Grove into its future –– one where the community can grow, develop, and strengthen its ties not only within, but also as a landmark in the region. The various goals of the plan align with ON TO 2050, the region’s comprehensive plan, and include: Improving roadway safety for all users Filling in gaps in the bike and pedestrian network Increasing transit use Reducing freight-related delays Increasing access to parks, recreational activities, and programming Making River Grove climate resilient Improving drinking water quality Continuing to diversify housing options Preserving the existing appearance and quality of housing Developing new housing in strategic locations throughout the village Increasing business activity on Grand Avenue Attracting and facilitating investment in new and existing businesses CMAP thanks the many partners who contributed their time, experience, inspiration, and wisdom, including the Village of River Grove, Triton College, School Board, and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago.
