CMAP launches regional questionnaire to shape future transportation plan

Public encouraged to take ten minutes to answer questions that will inform the 2026 Regional Transportation Plan for northeastern Illinois.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) invites residents across northeastern Illinois to shape the 2026 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) through a new questionnaire. Designed to collect diverse public input, the questionnaire focuses on travel experiences, challenges, and aspirations to create a transportation system that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable for the next twenty to thirty years.

The questionnaire, available on the RTP engagement site, is not intended for statistical precision but rather to amplify underrepresented voices and capture a broad range of perspectives in the transportation planning process. Responses will inform a transportation plan aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and sustainability for all modes of travel, ensuring the region’s diverse needs are met.

Individuals who live, work, and commute within the seven-county region (Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, Cook, Kendall, and Will counties) are encouraged to take ten minutes to answer easy questions about their personal experiences.

What is the RTP?

The RTP is developed in collaboration with northeastern Illinois’ local leaders, transportation agencies, community organizations, and the public. It is informed by research, technical analysis, policy development, and community outreach. It aims to answer three key questions:

  • What is the transportation system the region wants?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities to get there?
  • And how will the region implement the system it wants?

The plan ultimately reflects consensus on how the region will manage, operate, and achieve goals for a multimodal transportation system — including transit, highway, freight, bicycle, pedestrian, and accessible transportation. The plan’s approval is targeted for fall 2026.
