Illinois receives $430 million federal grant to reduce emissions

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) was awarded more than $430 million through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program — the third largest of the 25 recipients and $4.3 billion awarded overall. Illinois now has significant new funding to advance climate action across the state and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The IEPA aims to reduce emissions across several sectors, including buildings, industry, transportation, electric power, agriculture, and natural and working lands. It will use the funding to accelerate and expand existing programs to retrofit residential and commercial buildings and reach more communities across the state. This funding will support new programs, such as a clean industry concierge to support the decarbonization of 10 industrial facilities. The funding IEPA received will also go towards creating and expanding equitable climate workforce training opportunities, building on the momentum the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act created to reach the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is happy to have supported coordination efforts between the state and region to advance climate action implementation. CMAP recognize the hard work that implementers across the region put into their applications. Through our work to develop a Climate Action Plan for the Chicago metropolitan statistical area, we will continue to support and coordinate regional and state implementers.
